Local children’s author, master cook, and Army veteran Winsome Bingham visits the New Haven Free Public Library, 133 Elm Street, Café Patio (1st floor)! Listen to a reading of Soul Food Sunday, participate in activities that get kids moving, and ask questions! This event is offered in partnership with Yale’s affinity groups. Open to all ages and families, up to a maximum of 20 kids. Registration is encouraged.

Juneteenth New Haven 2022

Join The Descendants of the CT 29th Colored Regiment for their sixth annual Juneteenth event on Saturday, June 18th at the CT Violence Intervention Program, 230 Ashmun Street, from noon until 6:00 pm. The Harlem Renaissance is the inspiration of this year’s theme – Juneteenth New Haven! Revival of Cultural, Personal, and Social Wellness.

Myths and Facts about Mental Illness

During this discussion, you’ll learn facts about mental illness, as well as some of the myths about mental illness that persist in our culture. Topics explored in this discussion include definitions of mental illness; the importance of obtaining a diagnosis; representations of mental illness in popular culture (and how they can help or harm); and perceptions of mental health care in the US. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, join Being Well, DiversAbility at Yale Subcommittee on Mental Health, Office for Women in Medicine and Science, Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Yale School of Medicine, Women Faculty Forum, Working Women’s Network, WorkLife and Childcare, and Yale African American Affinity Group for a conversation with Marita Golden, author of The Strong Black Woman: How a Myth Endangers the Physical and Mental Health of Black Women.

Exploring the many facets of diversity, this program examines cultural differences, as well as differences in age, gender, marital status, and sexual orientation. This session also explores the benefits of diversity in the workforce as well as effective ways to achieve a safe and equal workplace.

Autism: A World of Possibilities

During this panel discussion, you’ll gain a good understanding of what the term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) means, including its history and the prevalence of this type of disorder. You’ll also learn how families are affected when a child is diagnosed with autism, as well as ways to be an ally and advocate for people with ASD. This event is open to everyone and will be recorded.
